Why I love being an optometrist – #1 (Your eye feels better now!)
Growing up, my dad (Dr. Glen) told me on a regular basis that optometry is fun.
And it is.
Optometry is a fun because we have a toolbox of techniques for enhancing and protecting a person’s vision.
Today, I had a chance to simply help an eye that was in a lot of pain.
The photo below is of an eye with a large scratch. The green areas are a yellow dye which glow when illuminated with a blue filter. The large green circle is an area where this yellow dye is pooling into a big corneal abrasion (the green horizontal lines run along the upper and lower eyelids).
This individual called me this morning in a lot of pain. Every time he blinked, his eyelid would rub over this area of scratched tissue, creating what he described as 8 out of 10 pain. This is somewhat like pouring hydrogen peroxide over a scraped knee.
Here’s why I love optometry: no longer than 10 minutes after he walked into the door, he was feeling better.
After first treating the abrasion with an antibiotic, we applied a bandage contact lens which served to protect his wound from his blinks. The improvement was immediate. We will plan to talk the lens off in a few days – just long enough to allow the wound to heal.
The patient was happy, and I was happy to have helped.
And that’s just one reason why I love optometry.
